The Canary Islands were on full alert on Sunday evening as hurricane force winds of between 130 and 170 kms/hour buffeted the islands. Only Fuerteventura and Lanzarote seem to have escaped the worst of the extreme weather.School and university classes tomorrow have been cancelled and many flights have also been suspended as the Canary Island Government has issued a level 2 alert. That runs from 10pm Sunday night on the islands of La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera and Tenerife, and from midnight on Gran Canaria.
Meanwhile on the Spanish mainland the Civil Protection agency is calling for extreme caution as heavy snow is forecast across parts of the country. Waves of heavy rain, snow and strong winds are forecast to continue all week.
