Just read a couple of interesting articles on the effect of the weakening Pound / Euro exchange rate over the last year or so. These are very difficult times for anyone either living here in Tenerife, but relying on an income from the UK, or even holidaymakers, whose holidays (and flights) are becoming very expensive in Euro terms.

Praise for Tenerife from world’s greatest cyclist

Lance Armstrong, seven times Tour de France winner, who recently announced his return to competitive cycling, and Jose Contador, this year’s tour winner, are both members of the Astana team, and while Contador told the assembled world sporting press in Tenerife that “it’s not easy” working together, but there have been no problems so far. Armstrong had words of praise for Tenerife, stating it was “one of the best places in the world for training”. The 37 year old American returns to the world’s cycling stage after three years, and while he has stated that he is back to prove that he can still be a winner, he paid tribute to Contador, and his “special ability to read the road”, adding that “ he is not the world’s number one for nothing”

Scandal of bribery in Tenerife football league game

The head of the Spanish Football Federation (SFF) yesterday called for an investigation into allegations made by a player at second division side Tenerife that he was bribed to lose a key match. The player, Jesus Mora Nieto, known as Jesuli, said he received around 6,000 Euros  to ensure Tenerife lost a match on the last day of last season that ensured opponents Malaga won promotion, the newspaper El Mundo said. Jose Luis Astiazaran, head of the SFF, called on committees “which are following the case to open an investigation and take action”.
